Blackout 2: Eerie Happenings

Ok -- after Blackout 1 last week, I got a bit too optimistic and thought that would be it.

Of course not. Don't trust Mother Nature. I got some "light" at the store after last week's darkness. At least I was prepared this time.

It was a big clean up (and cold out) and I put the chainsaw away. One of the three little pigs stopped on by and picked up the extra sticks for his house. He was very grateful. LOL
However, today, it is very windy and stormy, sheets of rain. Step out for a second, and you are drenched to the bone. Colorful leaves litter the ground like confetti.  Wet leaves are so dangerous.

So it is rainy and I think it would be a good day to get online and catch up.

I am online for not even ten minutes, enough to check in here and read all the comments, when I hear a big bang outside and then simutaneously&n bsp;a blank dark computer screen, lights out, I am in the dark again only there is some natural light, not much, it is too gray outside. I call the electric company.  I am the first to notify them but they wait till they get many phone calls before they do anything.

Now what to do without electricity?
I laugh.
I wonder what everyone is doing at TBlog while I empty the dishwasher, load the washing machine (but can't turn it on), sweep the floor, and in a mad rush, finish the four spectacular Halloween costumes for the big party at 1 pm.

However, since there is no electricity, my glue gun idea is shot and now I must resort to using duct tape to hold the "winning"  costumes together.

But wait, is there power where the party is, a phone call confirms yes, there is power which means not only lighting, but heat as well.
Great, so I finish up the costumes in a frenzied dash.

Now off to the party at 1:30, a bit late and the costumes are now soaked.

Yes, my idea and my crew of 4 wins another consecutive year! Woo HOO!
We were the "Sackvilles" -- I used those large leaf bags, cut off the bottoms, and stapled a piece of strapping (for support and form) on the inside front and back with eye hooks for the support twine over the shoulders.  Then I duct taped all sorts of saved trash (mostly boxed things) them inside the bag just above the strapping so that they peeped out a bit. Each bag got a stapled long grocery receipt. I did not know there would be arguements over whose receipt had the most money spent. It would have been much better if the glue gun was used though, the boxes would have been more secured to the bag.

Although they were homemade costumes out of recycled trash, they were still store bought.  ha ha.

When we took off the costumes, they fell apart.  Guess I have to fix them for the next party that is tonight.

The prizes won were gift certificates for pizzas and a service gift certificate.

We got home and the power was still off (5 hours at this point) and outside we heard this noise, it was our fire alarms going off.  I don't know how long they were going off but I felt bad for Toto1 and Toto2 who had to listen to that shrill sound while cooped up.  Toto2 was shaken up.  They don't like this weather either.

Within 90 minutes, the power came back on as well as the heat, and now I am here again.
Tomorrow's weather is suppose to be a huge improvement. Hooray!

I hope this winter is not this bad.  I really need to get some blog therapy because I can't believe what a withdrawal it is.  I have no control.

Worst part, is that this is the second time I was at TBlog when the power went out.
Creepy trick or treat and is there a relative eerie association with TBlog and my power outage? I cannot help but be suspicious. Bawah-ha-ha.

I am ordering one of the free pizzas now.  It will be ready in 15 minutes.
Can't wait!

LOL-- I see on the recent blogs list someone has a post called "Fashion Trash" -- were they talking about me? That title made my day.

Blackout

. . . and I was left in the dark. Not the first time though.

Big windstorm last night that lasted for hours and no power from 6 pm till this am (Saturday).
No heat and I have not a fireplace or gas heaters for backup (house was not built to add those).

I felt like Dorothy when the house was sucked up in the cyclone. My house felt like it was spinning as the wind whipped around it. The noise and sound were creepy.

I had to put the two little dogs (10 lbs each now know as Toto1 and Toto2) out and had to move my car sidways in the driveway to light up the front lawn and turn on the high beams so I could see them.  Poor things could hardly move the wind was so strong. They will be tired today.

What a mess to clean up today.  Not what I planned. Still very windy but sunny.

However, the good news was the sky was so clear last night and the stars were absolutely clear and brillant. I stayed out a bit too long stargazing because now today, my ears and nose are all stuffed up from the wild winds.

I cleaned a bit (LOL) then I went to bed early just to stay warm.

On another note -- all I had was a small mag flashlight and three little candles that were wedding favors to light up.  I think I need to get some sort of camping light that runs on rechargable batterie s. Can anyone recommend one?

I hate blizzards and northeasters, and ice storms.  I think I live in the wrong area (New England) but have been here in this region all my life. Weather seems to be getting worse though.  We had major flooding last spring.

Tomorrow is recipe day.  Multiple posts tomorrow so come on back!

Phone Spell and Dial ABC

Need to remember a phone number but can not and you are too lazy to put it on speed dial or on your number memory list? Or maybe your phone memory list is limited?

You can check out the words they spell out and maybe you may remember them.

Just type in the number and a list of words comes up and you can select from the list.

Phone Spell - puts words together for you.

Dial ABC also shows words but seperately. Allso shows motion and sound of a phone number.

This could be a good code for kids to use also if they have to remember a number.  Most can't remember numbers but can remember "code words".

For younger kids -- teach them your phone number to the tune of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star".

Shopping Spree

I just thought this was funny and had to share it. Thanks for visiting.

An old woman was arrested for shoplifting at a grocery store.

When she appeared before the judge, the judge asked what she had taken. The lady replied, "A can of peaches."

The judge then asked why she had done it.
She replied, "I was hungry and forgot to bring any cash to the store."

The judge asked how many peaches were in the can.

She replied, "Nine."

The judge said, "Well then, I'm going to give you nine days in jail--one day for each peach."

As the judge was about to drop his gavel, the lady's husband raised his hand and asked if he might speak.

The judge said, "Yes, what do you have to add?"

The husband said, "Your honor, she also stole a can of peas."

Using Gift Cards

You learn something new every day.

Bank gift cards functions like credit cards and can be used any where a major credit card is taken.
Some have a major credit card logo emblazed on them.

You can use them as if they were cash.  They make great gifts for any occasion.

However, there is a way to use them so that they will not be rejected.

If you make a purchase over the limit of the card's value, pay the first part of your total with cash or credit and then use the gift card to pay the balance.  Don't use the gift card first, it most likely will be rejected.

Fantasy Example, compliments of me. Use your imagination: You have made a purchase that costs $100 (think of anything you want for that amount!).
Your gift card is worth $50. (how generous!).
Pay $50. with cash or credit first and then apply the gift card to the purchase to pay it off.

Now, beware, some gift cards if not used, do lose value.  So you may think you have a $50. card but if not used within a set time, could be valued less.  Not all places do this but some do so make sure you know the card policy before you make a purchase.

If you can't remember or don't know what the card is worth, there usually is an 800 number on the back you can call to find out the balance before you use it.

Clerks in the store cannot tell you how much is on the gift card.  You need to find that out yourself.

Most gift cards can be recharged with new values too.  The bank gift cards are nice since you can "refill" at the bank.  These are great gifts for students. Some bank cards do have a small fee you must pay to acquire them so shop around.  Some give them free depending on your own bank accounts at that bank.

WalMart had a dual gift card that was great for children -- one for the child and one for the adult.  The adult could use their card to put money on while the child, away from home, could use it or ask for it to have more on it.  The cards are only good at WalMart though so one would have to love to shop there and be located near one to use.

Angel's Pennies

I found a penny today
Just laying on the ground.
But it's not just a penny
This little coin I've found.

Found pennies come from heaven
that's what my Grandpa told me.
He said Angels tossed them down
Oh, how I loved that story!

He said when an Angel misses you
They toss a penny down,
sometimes just to cheer you up
To make a smile out of your frown.

So don't pass by that penny
When you're feeling blue.
It may be a penny from heaven
That an Angel's tossed to you.

I'm Back!

After a stressful mishap.

So now I am depressed because I have missed blogging time and not on the Hot Blog list.

Blogging is like taking a daily vitamin.

OK I can laugh about it.

Bet you all missed me terribly.

I will be posting some consumer notes we can all benefit by later.
I have to visit all the blog posts I missed and comment!

Corner of the Sky

This is a song from the musical Pippin called "Corner of the Sky".  I think it is an inspirational song about the road of life.  It is a nice tune to play on the piano.

[PIPPIN]
Everything has its season
Everything has its time
Show me a reason and I'll soon show you a rhyme
Cats fit on the windowsill
Children fit in the snow
Why do I feel I don't fit in anywhere I go?

Rivers belong where they can ramble
Eagles belong where they can fly
I've got to be where my spirit can run free
Got to find my corner of the sky

Every man has his daydreams
Every man has his goal
People like the way dreams have
Of sticking to the soul
Thunderclouds have their lightning
Nightingales have their song
And don't you see I want my life to be
Something more than long....

Rivers belong where they can ramble
Eagles belong where they can fly
I've got to be where my spirit can run free
Got to find my corner of the sky

So many men seem destined
To settle for something small
But I won't rest until I know I'll have it all
So don't ask where I'm going
Just listen when I'm gone
And far away you'll hear me singing
Softly to the dawn:

Rivers belong where they can ramble
Eagles belong where they can fly
I've got to be where my spirit can run free
Got to find my corner of the sky

Christmas in July

A display of my counted cross stitch creations on display at a local cross stitch/needlework shop in July.
The shop selects a customer of the month.  If your name is picked, you bring in your work to be put on display for a month. I waited months for my name to be picked.

At the end of the month, you collect your work and recieve a nice store credit that should keep you in stitches for a while.  I got to pick up more floss, fabric, and patterns.

You may not know exactly what counted cross stitch is.
They are designs on a graph with little symbols for selected floss colors.  You match symbols to colors on the graph and transfer onto paper.
You find the center of the design and start on the center of your fabric following the chart of colors working outwards, up and down, from the center of both the design and fabric.  You make little X's on your fabric to fill in the color to create the design you are copying on the chart.

There are different sizes of fabric to use. The smaller the count, how many squares per inch the smaller the design will work out.  The larger the count, the larger the design is.  The "Merry Christmas" item is large (about 3 feet) because I used a large count of fabric.

Most pieces take hours to make.  If I work diligently, I average 40 to 80 hours on a large piece to a few hours on a smaller one.

It is a nice relaxing activity to do at night but now competes with blogging. LOL
It is a wonderful feeling after you finish a piece. Time well spent. I make quite a few as gifts.
There are some patterns that are favorites and I do over and over again.
I like birth samplers, wedding samplers, poetry, and some cute stuff.

I have also done my own custom designs and sold them.
Saddest story was a beautiful 50th Anniversary sampler I made up that was never really enjoyed because the wife's Alzeheimers took a turn for the worst before the 50th wedding anniversary party.

This activity keeps me out of trouble and is very portable.

Bisquick Pizza Crusts Recipes: Thick and Thin Crusts

It is Sunday again and time for another no frills recipe that cannot go wrong.

I cannot say enough about Betty Crocker's Bisquick.  It is a miracle product my favorite staple to use.

Here is an easy and quick Pizza Crust Recipe to make. The crust is thick and biscuit like.
It is great and easy to make up if you have lots of left over spaghetti sauce or use a canned or jarred spaghetti sauce.

You will need a 13 x 9 glass pan.

Add 2 cups of Bisquick into the pan.  Make a well in the middle of the Bisquick.

Add 1/2 cup of warm water.

Mix together with a fork the Bisquick and water.  It should resemble dough. If it is too stiff, add a few sprinkles of water, if it is too wet, add a bit more Bisquick.

Press and pack down with a spoon into the pan covering the whole bottom.

Add your sauce and other ingredients onto the pizza. Top with 2 cups of shredded cheese.

Cook in a 425 degree oven for about 20-25 minutes.

For a thinner crust use 1 1/2 cups of Bisquick and 1/3 cup of hot water.

Cheap and easy to make.
I never knew that you could do this with Bisquick.  When I was in 8th grade, I was invited to a party and the Mom (Mrs. Nichols) made the Bisquick Pizza Crust.  I was so impressed and I asked her for the recipe and have made this thousands of times over the years.
I wish I could still thank her today for introducing me to the miracles of Bisquick but I have no idea where she is.  Blessings to her and I am sure she would be surprised that I blogged about her cuisinart talents of yesteryear. A very fond memory indeed. LOL
