Toy Tycoon Likes Tikes On Lap
News Flash! North Pole -- In the wake of accusations of the sexual abuse of children by pop-star Michael Jackson, a former SantaCo employee has made startling allegations regarding the CEO of SantaCo, Santa Claus.
Roger Keebler, half-brother of the cookie mogul, and a long-time media bad boy, left SantaCo in November. Keebler, who leveled the accusations at a press conference last night, refused top detail the reasons for his departure from SantaCo. Though, in a written statement, he simply said that he left due to a disagreement over a claus (sic) in his contract and because it was "a matter of conscience."
Keebler claims that Claus (alias Kris Kringle) "likes to have little children sit on his lap and he promises them presents, including toys nd pets." Keebler claims to have arranged liaisons for Claus. "The old pervert likes malls." Keebler said, "and he even had me take PICTURES!" Keebler further alleged that Claus would apparently "blackmail parents into buying the pictures, shamelessly threatening to display them in the mall."
A senior official at SantaCo has dismissed the allegations as scurrilous and unfounded, stating that they don't deserve to be distinguished by a response. He said of Claus "The man's a saint. He loves kids, there's nothing wrong with that."
Asked why Keebler left the company, the official explained that Keebler, who's trying to promote his rock band, frequently missed work or was late. Keebler was responsible for tending the company's herd of reindeer. The official said, "The reindeer seemed to be very nervous around Roger, particularly if he stood behind them.", but would comment no further.
Reindeer are a long-time symbol of SantaCo, and have been, in fact, the source of a great deal of controversy. In 1947, SantaCo leveled an unsuccessful multi-million dollar lawsuit against Anheiser-Busch, claiming that their having a team of Clydesdales pull a sleigh was an infringement of SantaCo's trademark.
When asked about the reindeer, Keebler became very emotional, at times having to pause to control his tears. He struggled to regain his composure, saying "The son-of-a-bitch loves venison." He claims that Claus would have him arrange late-night meals of "blitzen-burgers."
Though Keebler's lawyer, who was present at the news conference, advised him to say no more, he did proffer these words of advice: "Christmas Eve, go ahead and keep your chimney flue open, but lock the doors to your kids' rooms and to the liquor cabinet."
Claus himself was not available for comment, saying only that "This is [his] busiest time of year."

Ping a Weblog Service
Since LadyG and Whisper both spoke of PingGoat . . .
Free service to ping a weblog manually.
What is a ping? If you like someone's blog and want to know when it is updated, by signing up for the free service, you get an automatic ping sound on your puter when their blog is updated so you can visit right away.
Ping A Weblog
Update 1/6/07
Rosie mentions in the comments using Bloglines. This is a service that you use to collect RSS feeds and add them to your Blogline account. You then visit your account and you can view all the blogs you read across the net at one site verses visting each one individually. If you want to actually go to the site, you just have to click on the title and it takes you there. Another feature I love about it, is that you can put everything in files! No need to use a ping service if you just want a one stop view of your blogosphere. Very convenient.

Funniest Movies: Bravo's Top 100 List
Bravo recently ran a show "The 100 Most Funniest Movies". Here is their list but they never said who put it together and what age group they were, which would make a difference. Most of these movies are within the last 40 years and nothing older than that. There are some older movies that are truly classical comedy (or "screwball comedies"). Today's comedies have mostly harrassment and potty humor along with tons of paid subliminal product commercials within the movie itself. (Think ET and the Reeses Pieces "addiction".)
So what additional movies do you think should be listed and what would you say should be removed or replaced, bumped up the list or put down the list?
At the time, I really liked that movie "Strange Brew", but it did not make the list as well as that camp comedy, "Meatballs". And what about Mel Brook's "Spaceb alls" or the quirky cult classic "Galaxy Quest"? well maybe they had limited audience appeal.
I also like those old Topper or Nick and Nora, The Thin Man movies (love Astra!) t hat use to run on Saturday afternoons on the local channels.

Chocolate Sings
This is an email received and I thought it worth sharing. Enjoy then smile.
One day I had a date for lunch with friends. Mae, a little old "blue hair" about 80 years old, came along with them---All in all, a pleasant bunch.
When the menus were presented, we ordered salads, sandwiches, and soups, except for Mae who said, "Ice Cream, please. Two scoops, chocolate."
I wasn't sure my ears heard right, and the others were aghast.
"Along with heated apple pie," Mae added, completely unabashed.
We tried to act quite nonchalant, as if people did this all the time. But when our orders were brought out, I didn't enjoy mine. I couldn't take my eyes off Mae as her pie a-la-mode went down. The other ladies showed dismay. They ate their lunches silently and frowned.
The next time I went out to eat, I called and invited Mae. I lunched on white meat tuna. She ordered a parfait. I smiled. She asked if she amused me. I answered, "Yes, you do, but also you confuse me. How come you order rich desserts, while I feel I must be sensible?
She laughed and said, with wanton mirth, "I'm tasting all that's Possible. I try to eat the food I need, and do the things I should. But life's so short, my friend, I hate missing out on something good. This year I realized how old I was. (She grinned) I haven't been this old before."
"So, before I die, I've got to try those things that for years I had ignored. I haven't smelled all the flowers yet. There are too many books I haven't read. There's more fudge sundaes to wolf down and kites to be flown overhead. There are many malls I haven't shopped. I've not laughed at all the jokes. I've missed a lot of Broadway hits and potato chips and cokes. I want to wade again in water and feel ocean spray on my face. I want peanut butter every day spread on my morning toast. I want un-timed long distance calls to the folks I love the most. I haven't cried at all the movies yet, or walked in the morning rain. I need to feel wind in my hair. I want to fall in love again. So, if I choose to have dessert, instead of having dinner, then should I die before night fall, I'd say I died a winner, because I missed out on nothing. I filled my heart's desire. I had that final chocolate mousse before my life expired."
With that, I called the waitress over.. "I've changed my mind," I said. "I want what she is having, only add some more whipped cream!"
This is my gift to you Be mindful that happiness isn't based on possessions, power, or prestige, but on relationships with people we love and respect.
Remember that while money talks, CHOCOLATE SINGS!

Extended Warranties
According to a recent local consumer news report, you need not buy an extended warranty when offered by a sales person, in particular for electronic, or appliances.
The item already comes with a warranty of a set amount of time (check it) and then the extended warranty kicks in after that time has expired. It may or may not cover everything the original one covered so beware of the terms.
The extended warranty business is a major money maker for most business that sell them.
They profit more than 50% in most instances selling you that piece of paper.
Around the time a warranty or extended warranty expires, you may get a phone call to purchase one or renew it. For the price of all you paid out, if your item breaks, you may have spent more on these warranties than a new product may cost.
I find Sears annoying. I got a huge humidifier and got an extended warranty. The humidifier eventually had a motor problem and when I took it in, they told me that that part was not covered under the warranty. It was a major component and it was better to buy a new product but not from Sears. Later on, when the warranty expired and I had no humidifier, they called to ask me if I wanted to renew and extend. Obviously the answer was NO and told them never to call again.
When I got a used Ford Winstar van, I did get the 3 year extended warranty on the vehicle for a few hundred dollars more. It was worth every penny as there was a costly issue with the engine that would have cost me several thousand dollars but the warranty kicked in and covered it. After it expired, the company never called again figuring I was a risk and cost them money in parts and mostly labor.
Tires -- yes they wore out before their miles were up and were replaced by the company.
The Sepco water heater (stone lined, energy efficient, highly recommend) came with a 10 year warranty. A few months before the 10 years were up, there was a intake pipe corrosion problem. After a phone call and problem description, they sent us a new one free of charge. That was a savings of $600! Just another comment about this water heater, it on a timer, a few hours on in the morning and the evening and the water was hot all the time, even in a power outage! The stone lining kept the water hot for hours after it got off the timer. It was a bit more expensive than the others but was a better product and had the best warranty of all water heaters. You get this at a plumbing supply store verses Home Depot or Lowes.
Two TVs ended up on the blink. One warranty covered everything. The other warranty covered the 35 cent part but the labor bill was our cost at $80..
On the verge of a purchase of another TV, the sales person (at Circuit City) was extremely pushy and harassing, I told him I said NO and I mean NO what part of that did he not understand and that if he kept it up, there would be NO SALE at all. He kept quiet after that and I walked away anyways only to return when he was not working and got it through another nicer sales person.
I also got an Emerson portable CD player and radio for a gift for my Mom at KMart (yes, I am a KMartian!). I paid the $2.00 extended warranty. It turned out that the item did not come with the proper cord, you had to buy that separately. My Mom changed her mind (too many batteries) so I had to return it. I got back the money paid for the item but not for the warranty. I was told if I held on to the paper work (you filled it all in), I could use it on another Emerson product purchased in the future. So I have a $2.00 piece of paper and nothing to use it on.
Another issue is shipping the item which may cost you lots if you have to pay for it both ways, from your home to the business and then back again.
So if you get something, remember to read the fine print of the warranty very carefully and decide whether it is worth it or not in the long run or if it would be cheaper to replace the item when it dies on you after a set amount of time.
Have you a story?
Let's hear it!

Black Friday
Black Friday always follows Thanksgiving in the USA.
It is a day all the stores open early for Christmas Bargains and some stay open late. This is usually the biggest day of record sales/profits in most stores.
It is also a day people protest the Christmas bargains and store hours and don't shop.
I do not shop on Black Fridays. I have better things to do (like blogging!)
Do you shop on Black Friday? I guess if I do not see a response from you, then you are out in the crowd shopping, waiting in line, stressing out and handing over your hard earned cash for special priced trinkets or maxing out your credit cards for the big ticket items.
The postoffice is usually very busy this day also. Remember to mail early.

Poll: Your Pet's Name?
Just thought I would post these sites where you can read about pet's names in literature, on TV, commercials or in movies. Fun to look at if you love your pet or enjoy reading about animals.
So -- today's question is what is your pet's name, past or present, and what kind of a pet did you have with that name?
The pets in my life.
Growing up:
1. Candy the black and white cat. He had his own agenda.
2. Dolly the Cocker Spaniel -- piddle queen.
3. Oreo the black and white Cocker Spaniel Beagle mix -- always pimping a ride in the car, truck, on the office chair, lawn mower, or motorcycle (not mine!, my brother's). He had a lot of personality.
4. Mr. Sloan - Golden Retriever Irish Setter mix - a really nice dog.
My dogs as an adult:
Honey, Misty, Checkers, Scooter, Mitzi, and Kelsey -- all Bichon Frises or "Beeshee Bozos", happy go lucky garden variety little dogs who suffer from "bad hair" days periodically.
My Zebra Finches: Mr. Boston and Ms. Maine, the original named after the train line. Ms. Maine seemed to enjoy killing off the "husbands", guess she was a "desperate house finch". My mom compared her to Elizabeth Taylor (number of husbands only).
Her other "husbands" were BooBoo Boston and Baby Boston. She had many babies which were given away to good homes. Ms. Maine lived to be about 8 years old before I found her keeled over stiff in her cage one morning.
It was a sad day in my life. I enjoyed the Zebra Finches but birds are messy pets.

Poll: What's your favorite . . .
Yes, I told you yesterday that it was Children's Book Week.
Today, I would like to know what your favorite children's book was when you were younger.
What book did you love to read (maybe a few times)?
What book, if you had one, influence you? (changed the way you thought, gave you a new perspective, maybe even influenced your choice of career?)
OR
If you read to a younger person, what is their favorite book they like to hear over and over again?
Facts:
It takes a child 1500 literacy experiences before they enter school to become a successful student early on.
Reading to any child helps increase their reading abilities as well as vocabulary and comprehension.
The majority of prisoners in this country are illiterate. Low reading levels and violent crimes go hand in hand.
As you age, and the less you read, your reading level drops. This is why so many students who are seniors in highschool may have grade level reading levels.
Practice makes perfect. Reading is fun and entertaining.
Make a trip to your library and look around for fun.
A book is a great gift any time.
Thanks.

Fudge Recipes
Children's Book Week is November 13th-19 2006.
This week I have posted fudge recipes to honor Maud Hart Lovelace's beloved Betsy-Tacy series of books. Betsy and her friends LOVED to make fudge all through the series of ten semi-autograhical books that took from when she was 5 years old till she got married and had her first child. That's a lot of fudge making!
Quick Fudge (Less than 30 minutes to make! My favorite!)
1 lb box of Domino’s confectioner sugar
6 tablespoons of margerine (or butter for richer flavor)
¼ cup of milk
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
1/2 cup of cocoa
Melt margerine or butter in a large saucepan.
Stir in and combine the sugar.
Add remaining ingredients.
Stir till it comes to a full boil.
Pour fudge into a buttered 8 inch square buttered pan. (or a 9 x 5 buttered loaf pan)
Let cool and then cut into small squares.
Optional: Add chopped nuts into the mix (1/2 cup).
Add chopped nuts to the top of the fudge after you put it in the pan and press gently into it for a "nutting topping".
No Cook Chocolate Fudge
2 (3 oz.) pkg. cream cheese
1 lb. confectioners sugar
4 (1 oz.) pkg. Premelted chocolate
1/2 tsp. vanilla
2/3 c. chopped nuts (optional)
Grease a 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan with butter or margarine.
Put cream cheese in bowl and let set at room temperature.
When soften add 1/2 pound confectioners sugar.
Stir constantly.
Add chocolate and vanilla.
Mix thoroughly.
Gradually add the remaining 1/2 pound confectioners sugar.
Stir until smooth.
Stir in the optional nuts.
Spread fudge in pan.
Place in refrigerator for two hours then cut into squares.
Fantasy Fudge (from the Marshmallow Fluff label, transcribed by my Mom, her favorite fudge recipe!)
1/2 cup butter
2 ½ cups of fine sugar
5 oz can of evaporated milk
12 oz package of semi-sweet chocolate chips
6/7 oz jar of Marshmallow Fluff (or 16 regular sized marshmallows)
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Optional: candy thermometer
Set aside in a large glass bowl: chocolate chips, marshmallow and vanilla.
Line a 8 or 9 inch pan with tin foil. (8 inch pan will be a thicker piece of fudge).
Heat milk on medium until warm and then add the sugar. Bring to a rolling boil.
Stir constantly to disolve the sugar and combine all ingredients and prevent chocolate from scorching the pan.
Continue to boil for 7 or 8 more minutes or until the candy thermometer reaches 235 degrees.
Very important: Do not over boil.
Remove from heat and add the butter.
Stir until dissolved but no more than 30 seconds.
Pour the boiled mixture over the ingredients in the large glass bowl and combine till chocolate chips have melted and are smooth.
Pour this mixture into the foil lined pan.
Allow to cool at room temperature.
Refrigerate.
Remove foil.
Cut into square pieces.
Optional: 1 cup (or 4 oz) of nuts: walnuts, pecans, or cashews. Put in the glass bowl with the chocolate chips, marshmallows, and vanilla. Pour the chocolate mixture over that combination of ingredients.
Peanutbutter Fudge (from The Boston Cooking School Cookbook)
2 cups sugar
2/3 cups milk (evaporated milk can be used also)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup Marshmallow Fluff (or marshmalow)
1 cup peanut butter
Cook sugar and milk to soft ball stage (234 degrees).
Add other ingredients.
Combine thoroughly and pour into buttered pan about 9 x 9 inches.
Cool and cut into squares.
Makes about 2 pounds.
Makes a great gift or for bake sales.
Here are several more fudge recipes in text format: Millionaire Fudge, Irish Creme/Amaretto Fudge, Irish Cream Truffle Fudge, Best Ever Cheese Fudge, Holiday Fudge, Five ingredient Peanut Butter Fudge.
Enjoy!

Veteran's Day History
In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD
(1872-1918)
Canadian Army
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
This historic and classic poem should be known by all people in this world.
It is a part of a well rounded education.
The poppies grew in the field where the dead soldiers were buried.
This is why you see Veteran's selling the red poppies on this day in the USA.
Money/donations collected from the sale goes to non-profit Veteran's funds.

Swedish Apple Pie and Apple Crisp
A couple of easy and tasty apple recipes. Tip: Good cooking or baking apples are Golden Delicious, Newton Pippin, Granny Smith, Rhode Island Greening, Jonathan, and Jonagold, Winesap, Baldwin, MacIntosh, Gravenstein, Gala, Fuji, Red Delicious
Each type of apple can equal a different type of taste.
I use an apple cutting tool to cut all my apples up. It is round and slices them into even wedges and you just remove the core from the center circle. Very fast and easy way to cut an apple. You can find this in the kitchen gadget section.
Swedish Apple Pie
1 egg
¾ cup of brown sugar (light or dark)
1 cup of diced apples
½ cup of chopped nuts (I use cashews.)
½ cup of flour
1 teaspoon of vanilla
a pinch of salt
Beat the egg, add the sugar.
Mix well and gradually add remaining ingredients.
Combine thoroughly.
Pour the batter into a greased 9 inch pie plate.
Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes.
Let cool.
Cut into 6 wedges.
Can be served with vanilla ice cream.
Apple Crisp
4 cups of sliced tart apples (about 4 medium)
2/3 to ¾ cup of packed brown sugar
½ cup of all-purpose flour (or self rising flour)
½ cup of oats (regular oatmeal will do not instant)
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (more if you wish)
¾ teaspoon of ground nutmeg
1/3 cup of butter or magerine softened
Heat oven to 375 degrees.
Arrange sliced apples in a greased 9 or 10 inch pie plate.
Mix remaining dry ingredients and butter or margerine.
Sprinkle mixture over the apples.
Bake for about 30 minutes.
Serves 6.
Old traditions: If you peel an apple, peel it so that the peel is one continuous strip (Like Mrs. Moffat did so often in The Moffat series by Eleanor Estes.). Take the apple peel strip and throw it over your left shoulder without looking. Notice how it lands, what letter shape does it look like? Well that is the first name intial of the person you will marry!
"If your future hubby's name you wish to know,
Over your left shoulder an apple peel throw.
It will wriggle and coil, and you will see
The first initial of who it will be
For the witches plot, and the hexes scheme
On the mystic night of Halloween."
Place an apple under your pillow, and you will see your future spouse in your dreams!
Enjoy!

Pumpkin Recipes: Pie, Cookies, Tea Bread
Here are some easy economical pumpkin recipes to try using canned pumpkin – pie, cookies, or a tea bread.
They make a nice addition at Thanksgiving with very little effort but great taste.
The tea breads are great for bake sales or gifts.
Impossible Pumpkin Pie
You heard the saying "easy as pie". This is my very favorite pie of mine to make that contains Bisquick, my very favorite miracle product.
You need not make a crust. The crust actually forms around the pie in the plate!
Tastes great warm or cold with whipped cream. Add shaved chocolate to the whipped cream. (Use a potato peeler on a chocolate bar for the effect.)
1 can of pumpkin pie (15 or 16 oz)
1 can (13 oz) evaporated milk
2 tablespoons of softened butter or margerine
2 eggs
3/4 cup of sugar (white or brown)
1/2 cup Bisquick baking mix
2 ½ teaspoons pumpkin pie spice*
2 teaspoons of vanilla
Heat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease a 9 or 10 inch pie plate.
Beat all ingredients for 1 minute in a blender on high or 2 minutes with a hand mixer.
Pour into pie plate.
Bake for 50-55 minutes. Let cool.
Serve with whipped cream.
*Pumpkin Pie Spice substitutes (choose one) =
Mix #1: 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of ginger, and ½ teaspoon of ground cloves
Mix #2: 1 teaspon cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ginger and ½ teaspoon nutmeg
Pumpkin or Squash Chocolate Chip Cookies
1 package Butter Recipe Deluxe Golden Cake Mix
2 eggs
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (see above for a mix)
1 cup canned pumpkin or squash
1 cup water
2 cups chocolate chips, I say, dump a large bag in.

My Porcelain Doll Creations

Here are two porcelain dolls I have made out of many of my creations.
This was my hobby in the 80's. The fun all ended when the lady who had all the equipment moved to Florida. She had nightly classes and hundreds of molds to choose from.
I would pay for the class then all the materials (slip per doll, eyes, hair).
Each student had to have a basic kit of tools and paints.
It was amazing how addictive it was to create "people".
I seemed to like to make lots of redheads.
I loved the Googly dolls, like those old fashioned Cambell Kids, Dolly Dingle types.
The process was pouring the mold (head, shoulder plate, arms, legs) , dumping excess slip, setting it up so it was soft but pliable.
Next was to clean up the greenware by shaving off some of the mold seams after set up and cutting the eyes, adjusting the greenware so it would be smooth.
It then air dried and was fired.
Next was sanding and painting -- cheeks, lips, eyebrows and painted eyelashes, or painted eyes (a challenge!) were difficult.
The doll was fired again to heat set the paint.
Next was sewing the soft body and attaching the fabric to the arms and legs then to the body itself.
Finally, it was sewing the clothing, the most tedious task but fun to create historical outfits.
It was a time consuming and expensive hobby.
I did not like the dust. That was annoying even though we had to wear masks and goggles during the process.
They like to stand under the Christmas Tree every year.
I think at some point, I will donate them to a charity auction for them to raise some money selling some raffle tickets or such. I made Teddy Bears for our town library that were raffled off and made lots of money to buy library books.
Every little bit helps.

Customer Service and Turkey Tip
It is that time of year when everyone starts their Christmas shopping.
Fortunately, I get mine all done and my Christmas cards too Columbus Day Weekend. I mail my cards out the Wednesday before Thanksgiving so most people get them on Friday. I also have my whole Thanksgiving dinnner ready to cook. I only do crockpot turkey breast. I get a turkey breast with an automatic pop up timer and put in the crockpot for 5-6 hours on high. The meat is tender and juicy and falls right off the bones making it easy to cut up.
So, let's get back to the shopping and customer service tip.
If you are unsatisfied in any way and need to call the company, then get a customer service representative that is not helping you, ask that representative to talk to someone on the "exectutive resolution team".
This is a little know group within a company that helps settle customer issues that remain unresolved even after a manager has stepped in.
Most companies do not tell you that these teams exist so you do have to advocate for yourself and your consumer dollar.

Car Insurance Price Break . . . if you qualify.
I just read a small article in the October 9th issue of First Magazine (page 84) that says you can get cheaper car insurance (up to 30% discount) if you work in certain professions (Examples: teachers, veterinarians, speech therapists were mentioned). You just ask your company agent about it to see if you qualify for the discounted rate.
Those who are considered in low risk groups are less likely to have accidents or file claims.

Thirty heart warming and colorful entries&nbs p;appear in their latest catalog.
However they were so overwhelmed and quite impressed with the entries (4,832!) that they created a "museum" website so you can view them all.
