Vanishing Bonuses

I ran across this article and thought it was most interesting and how times have changed.

One lady did not get her typical bonus, quit her job and started a new business.

I would like to work for her, she sent her employees to Italy as a bonus.
Oprah took her crew and their families to Hawaii one year, maybe I can work for Oprah?  It would mean a move though from the frigid North East to the windy city of Chi town.

My Dad gets a turkey.  One year my brother got a gift card/certificate to Bugaboo Creek which he generously shared.  Sometimes he gets other stuff.
I bet some people get gift cards to Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, or Tim Horton's so they can get their java jolt before they get to work with a buzz and be more productive, maybe.

The Vanishing Holiday Bonus -- have a box of tissue to wipe your tears while reading. Young people please take note.

Magnetic Poetry Online

At three different yard sales over time, I got a plain silver me tal box with new Christmas cards (a dollar), a gift bag of magnetic poetry (larger font, a dollar), and an original box of magnetic poetry (small font, fifty cents).  I put all the poetry into the silver metal box since I sent out all the Christmas cards. I went through the box taking out the suffixes then storing those in a empty film canister to find them easier amongst 800 pieces or so.

I wrote some sentences using the inside silver box cover as my slate.
I can keep my sentences there until next time or I can write sentences other people will find when they open the box to play!

Then I remember my friend Chris told me about a magnetic poetry site online.  I can't remember the URL she gave me but here are a couple you might want to play with.

Some people take a screen shot of their poem and post that on their site.
Maybe I should write a tutorial on how to take a screen shot?

Anyways, have some fun. Both sites have click and drag words and categories to choose words from.

Advice for Returning Gifts

Need to return something Santa brought you by accident?  Have a habit of returning lots of things?

Now some stores are using a software program to track your returns and keep a file on you.

Make sure you know what the store policy is before you decide to return the item. (Examples: time limitations, restocking fees, issuing store credit only)
Make sure you have the receipt when returning.

If you don't, most stores will only give you credit for the item's current price.  For instance, you actually paid $100. for the cashmere sweater but now it is on sale for $50. and that is all the credit they will allow you without a receipt.

Here is an article with more information and tips on returning goods.

Christmas Quotes

Happy Holidays to all my devoted readers and fans. ;-)
Here are some thoughtful Christmas sentiments I wish to share with you on this special day.

May you have the gladness of Christmas which is hope; the spirit of Christmas which is peace; the heart of Christmas which is love.
~ Ada V. Hendricks

Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.
~ Washington Irving

Christmas is forever, not for just one day,
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.
The good you do for others is good you do yourself.
~ Norman W. Brooks, “Let Every Day Be Christmas"

Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.
~ Calvin Coolidge

Christmas may be a day of feasting, or of prayer, but always it will be a day of remembrance-a day in which we think of everything we have ever loved.
~ Augusta E. Rundel

Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.  ~ Hamilton Wright Mabi

Let us keep Christmas beautiful
Without a thought of greed,
That it might live forevermore
To fill our every need,

That it shall not be just a day,
But last a lifetime through,
The miracle of Christmastime
That brings God close to you.
~ Garnett Ann Schultz

Santa's Keys Poems

A quick and easy craft post.
How does Santa get in a home or apartment with no chimney?
He needs some magic keys!

All you need are some old skeleton keys (Home Improvement Store, Hardware store, Yardsale or Thrift shop find) and copy and paste a poem below onto your word program and print on paper.
You cut the paper then attach the paper to a shipping tag or make one tag up yourself.
Attach the tag with festive ribbon or fibers or just a heavy duty key ring to the key/s.
Have the children hang them outside your door for Santa to let himself in.

Dear Santa,
I know I'm too young to speak,
But you know that I'm fast asleep.
So down my chimney you can creep.
And while your here, take a peek.

Dear Santa,
We don’t have a chimney
As you can plainly see
But we still want you to visit,
So just use this magic key!
We don't have a chimney for you to climb through,
But if you don't visit my our house I don't know what I'll do.

Some say you are magic and can use any old key
As long as we hang it out in a place you're sure to see.
So we're leaving this old key right outside our door
Saying our prayers, jumping in bed, and we won't worry anymore.

This key is very special, you see.
It won't work for you or me.

Hang it just outside your door
Then go to bed and worry no more.

Close your eyes and close them tight,
cause Santa Claus is coming tonight!

Today's chimneys are awfully small
and Santa's far from thin,
So leave this key outside the door
To allow Santa to come in!

Dear Santa,
We don’t have a chimney
For you to come in through
And if you miss our house
I don’t know what I’ll do.

Mom says you work magic
And can use just any old key
If we just hang it outside
in a place you’re sure to see.

So I’m placing this old key
Right beside our door
Say my prayers and jump in bed
And I won’t worry any more.

tBlogosphere

I have to post this for prosperity.

The past few days I have gone from the rank of 30 something to 21, to 19 then 17 in the Hot Blog List.

Today, Whisper posts on my Toothpaste for Breakfast post a congrats for being in the top ten Hot Blogs.  Gosh, between last night and this am, I moved up 10 spots.  Sorry if I hurt anyone knocking them down on the climb.

So Surrogate is now #1 and I bet he is thrilled!  Congrats to all the top 10 and also those who made the list who were never on it before.  I noticed that a few new bloggers here made it.

I am posting the top ten as of this moment in time and cyberspace --

1. Surrogate
2. Cutter
3. LadyG
4. Whisper
5. Pastor Dave
6. Ruined
7. Inkspector
8. Doeeyed
9. Akelso
10. RosieTulips

Noticed the stats are working but we all lost a weeks worth of visits.  Also noticed there is no non tblog visits or visit links from other sites anymore, just tBlog community member visits.

So once again, thanks to Nickster and Rocky! and I hope everyone likes my new template.

I will be back later to update and link up everyone's blog on this post but need to tend to some business now.

This is the best Christmas present ever!

The Sport Template!

Hello!

I just decided to try a new template and see what I could do with it.
It is the Sport template.

On this one, you can only put a background on the top, footer and the links.
I enjoy changing the top and footer backgrounds.

I kept the body background all white since you could not add a blog body background.  I could have framed it with HEX color.

The barhead contains the house image.  You could put a banner there also. The house is staying till after the holidays then I will change it.

Also, I am using a background when I do block quotes.  I hand code those in the HTML box.  You will see background usually when I post poetry.

This template has three HTML boxes.
One and two are where my avatar and links to the "word of the day", "quote", and "on this day in history"&nbs p;are.
The third one is on the footer but I have nothing to add there yet, maybe a Google search on this site.

I still am going to play with it and tweak this template a bit more.

I tried the Pink one but there were no HTML boxes (no images or counter can be added on the side/navigation bar) on that but you could add backgrounds on the main page, the blog, links, and header.  If you wanted a plain and simple blog with some backgrounds, the Pink one is a good one to try.

Christmas Poll

Two quick Holiday questions --

1. What sort of Christmas tree are you putting up: real or fake (prelit?), or none at all?

2. When do you open Christmas presents (if you get any!), Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?

My answers:
1. This year I am going fake but not prelit.
2. I like to open presents Christmas Day.

Thanks!

Motion Sensor Nightlights

I bought another one today because I just love them.  They stay off until they sense motion (even a gust of air) and they turn on automatically within several feet. I have a few from GE - in the hallway, and the bathrooms (great for a night trip).  I got a First Alert one today at Target for the back door. It is a bit larger than the GE ones (got those at WalMart). They cost around $10.00 or less each but they are a worthy investment.

I just thought I would post this because it is a nice inexpensive gift for someone, especially an elderly person.

The only problem I have is if someone leaves the laundry door opened, and the dryer is running, the nightlight stays on from the dryer vibrations.

I would think that if you put one in a baby's room, when they cry, it would go on automatically too from the crying vibrations.

Hello Kitty

NOTE: Original image removed due to bandwidth theft.

I laughed when I saw someone came to my blog from a search of Hello Kitty.
As far as I know, this has not been a topic but I will turn it into one because that theme song is spinning in my head, "Hello Kitty, How are you today?" from the short lived TV series.

Hello Kitty -- so cute, and so sweet, and little girls love her and her little friends.  Steve Carell who plays Michael Scott on NBC's The Office, said on the Tonight Show, that he should own stock in Hello Kitty since his young daughter  seems to have every Hello Kitty item ever made.

Hello Kitty -- although animated, is a good role model for goodness, kindness, politeness, cooperation, and&nbs p;doing the right thing.

So let's plan an easy Hello Kitty party here with all Hello Kitty party paper ware available at your party store, WalMart, Target, KMart or online at Birthday Expressions (lots of themed stuff there and you can buy in preset packages).
Your party should be 2-3 hours long depending on age and activities planned.
Naturally -- any theme could work with just these simple general directions.

Hello Kitty Party Planning Ideas -- Think Pink!

1. Send out invites a few weeks in advance using the Hello Kitty invitations. Have an RSVP number and cut off date to respond.  Call anyone who has not responded and get a reply.

2. Decorate your house Hello Kitty style and with pink and white, maybe some red streamers and balloons.  If you are doing a party in good weather, you can create a May Pole with the streamers.

3. Bake a 9 x 13 inch boxed cake, freeze it, create a Hello Kitty template (can enlarge a picture at the copy shop) then cut out a Hello Kitty shaped cake while frozen to prevent crumbling and decorate appropriately.  You can "color" the bow with pink or multicolored sprinkles or jimmies.  Use black jelly beans for eyes, a yellow jelly bean for the nose, and black licorice for the whiskers.

4. When guests arrive, have them sign their names in the Hello Kitty Guest book and take an individual picture of the guest.  Just make a book and put a picture, an extra invitation picture, on the cover which is pink.

5. After all guests arrive, take a few group pictures. You might even like to take a picture of your child and each guest also.

5. Play Hello Kitty Bingo -- Make a bingo board with only six blocks.  Have kids make their own bingo cards with stickers of Hello Kitty and her friends.

6. Play Musical Kitty. You will need a plush Hello Kitty toy or pillow. Kids sit/stand in a circle (or the like) with their backs facing toward the center of the circle. The music starts (play the Hello Kitty Theme) and the passing begins.  When the music stops, the person holding the plush Kitty is out.  The game continues till one person is left and they are the winner.

7. Sing Happy Birthday to the honoree, blow out the Hello Kitty candles.  Serve pink raspberry ginger ale (or small bottles of water) and strawberry ice cream with the cake. For easier serving before the party -- scoop the ice cream into foil cupcake liners in a cupcake pan, wrap with clear wrap and put in the freezer.  You just need to pop out the liner with the serving of ice cream.

8. The birthday child opens presents.  You may want to decorate a chair as a "birthday throne".

9. Have the children go on a treasure hunt for their Hello Kitty treat bags or purses.  Once they find a bag, they must sit down or help another child find one.  One per child.

10.  After the party, have your child write thank-you notes (Hello Kitty stationary) to those who brought presents and mail them out next mailing day.  Include a picture of the group.
You can also make your own thank yous by printing your sentiment onto a full sheet of card stock, cutting it in half and folding over then adding the group portrait to the front of the card.

Options:
1. Have a Hello Kitty pinata.  Fill with candy and trinkets. Pull on the ribbons to release the candy.

2. Play pin the bow on Hello Kitty's head. Create a huge Hello Kitty head, color and cover with clear contact paper. Create several bows with tape on the back.

3. Balance a pink balloon on a spoon race for a set distance, can be an individual race or a team race.

4. Try a balloon alley volley -- two people facing each other but going sideways down a set distance and a set distance apart, hitting the balloon to keep it air born between them till they get to the finish line.
If it is dropped or hits the ground, they must start over.  Best time wins.

5. Balloon Hop -- this can be done individually or as a team. Balloon is placed between knees and the person hops their way to the finish line.  First team or best time wins.

6. Find Hello Kitty -- You will need a small Hello Kitty object.  A selected person leaves the room.
You can play two ways --
1. The object is held by one person and the person outside the room comes back in and must guess who has it.
OR
2. The object is hidden somewhere in the room and the person is directed by the words hot or cold to find it.

For younger kids, try coloring sheets as an activity.
Check here for a variety of themed coloring sheets to choose from.

Enjoy!

Interesting Sandwiches

On pumpernickel -- spread cream cheese on 2 pieces of bread, add a ham slice and a slice of Swiss Cheese.

On a bulky/Kaiser roll -- coleslaw and shredded orange cheese.

On toasted bread (any kind) sliced turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce.

On whole wheat -- heavy on the mayo, add sliced turkey and three slices of tomato and some lettuce.

On white -- ground turkey mixed with mayo, one slice of American cheese, four cucumber slices.

Half and Half -- one slice of wheat, one slice of white, mayo, chicken, pickles and potato chips layered in the middle.

Peanutbutter and honey on 7 or 12 grain bread.

On sourdough bread -- turkey, bacon, swiss, sliced red onion with poppy seed dressing.

On homemade or Candadian white bread -- Roast beef, tomato, pickles, sliced onions with dill dressing.

On a Kaiser or bulkie roll or dark bread -- Roast beef, swiss cheese, tomato, purple onions, lettuce or sprouts with mayo.

On white -- Sliced cucumbers and butter with salt and pepper.

On lightly toasted white -- sliced cucumbers, sharp cheddar cheese, sliced tomatoes, mayo.
(Canadian white works great too and slightly broil the sandwiches in the oven before serving to crisp the bread if you don't use a toaster.)

On potato bread -- liced left over meatloaf with ketcup.

On thick bread: open sandwich of left over meatloaf with brown gravy and melted swiss cheese.
(put in oven at 400 till cheese melts)

On thick white -- tuna with mayo, sprouts, cheese, lettuce and onion.

On sourdough, pumpernickel, or rye bread -- corn beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese and thousand island dressing

Grilled Cheese
We serve it with tomato wedges and cucumbers, brocolli and cauliflower with dip on the side.
Many other people serve it with tomato soup and a dill pickle and chips.

We also make
1. grilled cheese with purple onions,
2. grilled cheese with ham,
3. grilled cheese with ham, and tomato.
Yes, all ingredients listed go into the sandwich and get cooked.

I use any type of cheese also, slices or shredded.
One side of two slices of bread are lightly buttered.
I use my George Forman grill (love that appliance!) to cook them up.

PBS had a show "Sandwiches You Will Like" written and produced by Rick Sebak -- they travelled around the country and stopped at all the recommended hot spots, talked to the sandwich making gurus, and interviewed customers about what they were ordering and how tasty it was. YUM! It really was a great show and I got some ideas on better sandwich building 101.  I would like to go to a few of these places.

There was also a companion book to the series which included 75 sandwich recipes (what was on the show and more!).  The book is by Becki Mercuri

If you have a favorite -- why not leave a comment and tell us what it is!

Enjoy!

Thanks Dad!

Last night I was talking to my Dad on the phone and directed him to my blog.  I was explaining a lot to him and he was on the computer because he got DSL and can multitask unlike me still on dial up.  Hopefully that will change in the next few months.

I told him to check out my archives page (listed above) but he said it did not come up.  So today, I checked it and it is fixed.  Seems like the L in HTML was missing.  That is enough to cause a major problem.

Nobody noticed it around here? and nobody told me?

Thanks Dad for the favor!

Happy Holidays.

A Yankee Swap Explained

Here is a post I made elsewhere and thought maybe some reader can use it in their life.  Actually, I just wanted a copy of my own post. ;-) But hey! I am sharing with you if you are reading this post!

A Yankee Swap/Exchange is when you have a group and each person puts their name in a hat, bag, envelope and you pick someone else's name and get a present just for that person only. The person in charge makes sure you don't pick your own name though although some people like to buy for themselves.

The name you pick remains a secret.  Sometimes there is a party for presentation and sometimes you just present the gift.

This is also can be know as a "Secret Santa" Yankee swap too.  Some Secret Santa Swaps you leave little gifts secretly for a few days for the person you pick.  They try to guess who their Secret Santa is.
You purchase or make your main gift, and on a designed day and time, make the presentation revealing yourself.

Another form of a Yankee swap, usually with a group, is you just bring a present at a set value all wrapped up. All gifts go on a main table. Some people just put their "from" name on a tag, most gifts though are "anonymous". Then each person picks a number for the order of picking a wrapped present. Some swaps require you do not tell what number you got, some people exchange order numbers.

Everyone sits down, a circle sitting arrangement is most ideal.

The first number goes to pick a present and opens it up so all can see.
The second person goes and picks a present BUT if he/she likes the first person's present better, they can "take it" and give them the one they picked to #1. This goes on, all numbers in counting order pick.

Depends on the group, but it can be that they just take the gift and give their wrapped gift so that #1 gets to open a second gift OR the gift is already opened before the swap so #1 knows what he or she is getting in exchange for it being taken.

Naturally if you are one of the last people, you can take from anyone who previously opened and swapped a gift. The last person to pick a present, usually ends up taking the best gift brought.

If you are thinking of organizing one, make sure the rules are in print and established within your group.
1. acceptable decent gifts -- something you would like to receive.
2. Price limit.
3. Whether "from" tags should be put on the gifts (safety and security reasons in some cases)
4. Limitation of taking a gift -- if the same "coffee pot" is taken three times, then it can no longer be taken away and stays with the last person who has it.
5. A "bonus" gift -- who ever picks that gift, it cannot be taken away. In other words, this gift is totally an unexpected and more expensive gift in the pile donated by the company. (EX: 2 tickets to the Superbowl, an exaggeration but you get the idea.)

I have even participated in a "bad gift Yankee swap", where you bring a gift you never used to recycle it with other participants. In other words, you are trying to get rid of something you have that is not being used or useless to you. Items do have to be in new condition, in original packaging though not used.

Another swap I participated in was one where you bring a yard sale find to pass off. Lots of laughs at that one.

Other terms used for this event "White Elephant", "Dirty Santa", "Gift War", "Grinch Exchange", "Rob Your Neighbor", "Thieving Santa", "Nasty Christmas", and "Cajun Christmas" swaps. They are basically the same thing but you bring things you wish to "regift" (slightly used, not used anymore, in very good to excellent condition).

In an episode of NBC's The Office, they had a Yankee Swap that Michael kept changing the rules. It was a natural disaster of course so it is best to have rules and stick to them.

All in all, it is a fun time around the holidays to participate in this sort of activity.

Angel Pennies

I finished updating my blog post archives and noticed that this post was missed by most blog viewers so have a peek at a dear little poem about finding pennies.  You can comment there as I shut off the comments on this post, or so I thought.

Thanks for visiting.

Notes and Christmas Movie Poll (read comments)

I just posted a couple of easy recipes.

I will be updating my article archives this week since I have not been keeping on top of that. No piano playing Christmas carols this week or maybe on a limited basis.

People seem to be sick around here and I hope I do not get whatever they have.
This always happens when we have very warm weather (60-70 degrees) then very cold, windy, rainy weather. Several local stations report that we will not have a white Christmas.  For me, this is great news as the radiator just burst on the tractor so there is no snowplow till the radiator gets fixed.

The house had Christmas decorations but they all blew away with a two day wild wind and rain storm.

Poll --

I have watched Elf a few times on USA and a few times more to come.
I like A Christmas Story too.
Charlie Brown and Meet Me in St. Louis and Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory (usually on PBS - an excellent story!) also comes to mind.

So, what Christmas movies do you like to watch? (huge list in comments)

Rum Cream Cake

Here is another favorite and easy recipe of mine.  I am posting it because when I moved, I lost it, and I need to remind myself of it with a blog posting, just in case I move again and lose it again.  You all benefit here by my post.

I have made this four layer cake for former roomates and pot luck dinners and it is a huge hit.  Very easy to make.

1 - 18 1/2 ounce pkg yellow cake mix
2 eggs
2/3 cup Bacardi light rum (80 proof)
2/3 cup of water

Filling and Topping
1 pint (2 cups) of heavy cream
1/4 cup Barcadi light rum (80 proof)
pinch of salt
1 cup of confectioner's sugar (powdered sugar)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Grease and flour two 8 or 9 inch round pans.

Combine cake mix, eggs,  2/3 cup of rum, and water in a large bowl.
Blend then beat at medium mixer speed 2 to 4 minutes.
Turn into prepared pans and bake according to cake package directions.
Cool layers throughly.
Slice the 2 cakes horizonally in half so you have 4 layers.
To make slicing easier, you can freeze the cake to firm it up a bit before slicing.  You don't get as many crumbs this way.

Combine remaining ingredients in a bowl, beat until cream mixture is stiff.
Spread cream mixture between layers and over the top of the cake.
Chill the entire cake till serving time.

Options -- decorate with fresh strawberries, or banana slices or sprinkle ground nuts or "hokey pokies" (jimmies, sprinkles) on the top.  You can even use a potato slicer and make chocolate curls for the top also.

Easy Slice Sugar Cookies

Christmas is just around the corner and decorated sugar cookies are easy to make and a wonderful treat with tea or hot cocoa!
I got this recipe off a Domino Sugar bag years ago and it is a favorite mostly because it is uncomplicated and easy.
You can use any regular white granulated sugar you wish but of course, if you use the Domino sugar, they will taste better (joking)!

1 cup of sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) of butter or margarine
1 egg
1 tablespoon of vanilla (yes that is one tablespoon)
2 1/4 cups of all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda

Additional sugar for the tops.

In a large bow., mix sugar and butter.
Beat in the egg and vanilla until light and fluffy.
Mix in flour and baking soda.

Divide dough into halves.
Shape each half into a roll that is 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
Wrap and refrigerate for one hour (or 30 minutes in the freezer).

Cut roll into 1/4 inch slices.
Place on ungreased baking sheet and sprinkle generously with more sugar.

Bake in 375 oven for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned around the edges.

Cool on a rack.
Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
