Consumers: Gas Price Checkers

Looking for the least expensive gas to buy in your area?

Click on any of the links below and type in your zip code.

Local gas stations show up in chart form so you can compare prices from station to station in your area.

On our local TV news show had some advice for saving on gas also.
They mentioned  fill up your tank on Tues (all day) or Wednesday (morning) because Wednesday afternoon is when the gas price change takes place.
However, if there is a change, it can also be cheaper than last week.

Update 8/15: I was at a few appointments waiting and found this info to add to this post.

Where does your gas money go? Price per gallon breakdown EX: $2.84

$1.65 goes for the company drilling and transporting. They sell crude oil to make gas but due to Katrina, many of these refineries are not in operation yet. Investors get a take on this money.

.60 cents goes to the refineries to change the oil into gas by thermatically heating and moleculary cracking it.

.45 cents goes to the Government tax(30-70 cents) and Federal taxes of 18.4 cents. State and local taxes help pay for roads, bridges, and the clean air act.

.14 cents is the profit the station owners get per gallon sold. Stations are owned and operated independently by individuals who sell that brand of gas. They are not owned by the gas companies themselves.

From Good Housekeeping 9/06 pg 58

Another tip: Save money, don’t top off your tank. It will either spill or evaporate.

Other Tips: Buy your gas at the discount/warehouse stores, they tend to be a few cents less than the other stores but over time, you save dollars as those pennies saved add up!

Use a Gas Rebate card to purchase your gas, some give a 5% rebate.

If you have a credit card that offers an annual rebate, use that but pay your bill off every month to avoid finance charges.

That's a great link to pass along. I believe most of the gas, whatever brand, comes from the same lines. So, cheapest is still the same quality. This site tells me that the local Kroger has the cheapest gas. Well, that is true, but to get the lowest price you have to purchase $100 in groceries (no problem for my family of 6) and be signed up for their discount card. I generally buy my gas at QuikTrip, which I can alway count on to have a good lw price.

Thanks for your comment. At the Warehouse stores, the gas is cheaper but the lines are so long! I think that this site is great because it gives you some alternatives, even if you do a road trip a few hours away, check out where you could fill up for the ride home.

I live near a University (5 miles) and the gas prices are high in our area because we are a bedroom town (where college kids crash and rent). My Dad lives two hours away in another University town and the gas prices are HIGHER there and he is further north near Canada!
However, on our way up, in the middle of the state, the gas prices are CHEAPER!! So we go up on a half tank, fill up half way, come home and fill up at that same station on the way back.

Gas station roulette I guess.

Yes, I imagine because of how they have to transport it to the islands by tankers.

Thanks for that! It's in my favorites now. I always thought that the HEB down the road from me way pretty cheap, but turns out something on the Hill-- where 2 of 3 of the local universities sit-- is the cheapest. That surprised. It's usually the most expensive over there.
